SUSTAINABILITY- MATTERS THE MOST

The Cotton Team
Posted on

At The Cotton, sustainability is central to our ethos. We seek to minimize our carbon footprint and manufacture goods that are ethical and sustainably sourced by reflecting on the environmental effects of our manufacturers, our approach to staff, and how we make and package our garments.

We do not mass produce, but rather work exclusively on each customer order to produce sole product which is made only with the finest materials, with careful consideration going into everything we do and everyone we work with. Our UK-based workrooms allow us to reduce our shipping carbon footprint and environmental effects. Completed orders are now delivered directly to the client from the workroom, eliminating the use of transport and excess wrapping.

    SHIRTS AND TIES

Fabric remains from the shirt cutting process are used to produce boxer shorts and cloth bags, leaving only tiny portions of material left over. The tie cutting method itself does not lend itself to significant quantities of waste. The cotton remnants it creates are given to local initiatives."

THE ALBINI GROUP FOR COTTON AND LINEN

We have a long-standing relationship, established in 1876, with the Albini Company, which supplies the majority of our cotton. The Albini Group have an important partnership with ECCI Cotton, who are an association formed by small local farmers and supported by the Ministry of Agriculture of the Island of Barbados. This has supported the production of our exclusive West Indian Sea Island Cotton.

        OUR MANUFACTURERS AND SUPPLIERS

Our demands and much more are met by all our existing yarn manufacturers. All of our yarn producers are based in Italy, Switzerland or Turkey and produce the finer and most luxurious yarn in the world. Many of our fabric and yarn producers have a dyeing house of their own. Certifications such as OEKO-Teks Standard 100, ISO 9000, Global Recycle Standard, Global Organic Textile Standard GOTS and many more are kept by all our industry partners. All our partner companies who manufacture our packages meet all our standards for suitability. Gritti supplies our shirt buttons and they are all made of sustainably sourced mother-of-pearl shells. There is no wastage and the remaining shell is ground and used for fertilizer until the button blanks have been punched out of the shell.

        PACKAGING

We help small UK companies in order to supply all our packaging here in England. In order to use the packaging for any other reason, we have included luxurious packaging for all our apparel, or it can be used to hold our timeless and durable clothes for generations to follow. We are currently working to improve our packaging so that it is completely recyclable, and aim to also reduce plastic use.
