THE COTTON®'s COTTON SOURCES

Cotton by its nature is a soft, smooth and comfortable material. It breathes, does not stick against one’s skin, releases stains easily hence washes more cleanly. There are different types of cotton varieties. Finer cotton varieties are characterized by the length of the individual fibres or staples – the longer the staple, the finer the yarn – and the smoother and stronger the fabric. THE COTTON London uses only extra-long staple (ELS) cotton varieties for its dress shirts, Polo shirts, T-shirts and other clothing.

Text - THE COTTON®'s COTTON SOURCES

West Indian Sea Island Cotton (WISIC) rates the highest grade. It is the longest, strongest and silkiest. It is also the rarest -only 4/10,000th of 1% of the world’s cotton is WISIC. This makes Sea Island Cotton 5 times more expensive than the next best grade cotton. The best can only be grown in the small land masses of the Caribbean Islands which have the right amount of sunshine, rain, humidity, as well as a dry season and wet season in the right sequence for the right duration. No other area of the world matches that. The Eastern Islands of the Caribbean have particularly perfect conditions for growing and the best of the best is grown from the Gossypium barbadense seed. West Indian Sea Island Cotton is not as famous as Egyptian cotton but it is superior and it is the rarest.

Majority of the sea island produced in the Caribbean is acquired by Swiss Firm Spoerry established since 1866. Spoerry 1866 brand themselves as the soul of fine textiles. Their manufactured Sea Island cotton has been the foundation of Spoerry’s rare and precious top quality yarns for over 140 years. These precious fibres are cultivated exclusively on the British West Indies islands in the Caribbean where the climatic conditions are ideal for their growth. WISICA International (West Indian Sea Island Cotton Association International) is a specialist organisation which inspects and certifies every kilogram of locally produced cotton. Spoerry SEA ISLAND is the unique quality yarn which has a natural silken sheen, is soft as cashmere, long-lasting as wool, highly durable and has the perfect yarn structure.

Here at The Cotton London most of our Socks are made with highest quality Sea Island cotton making them breathable with high absorbency and the fine cotton gives them a smooth feel and light sheen.

Egyptian Cotton Giza 45

Giza cotton is one of the highly rated cotton fibres of the Egyptian cottons. This cotton is cultivated in fields along the River Nile and in the fertile region of its delta. Egyptian cotton is handpicked and then spun with special machines. It is the longest, thinnest, strongest and has the best uniformity index of 88.5 of the ‘Giza’ grade cottons. Its exceptional length and brightness (very similar to silk) gives this yarn the feel and look of a top quality product. This cotton yarn is produced in a very small region because of which it is rare to be found and is expensive.

Here at The Cotton London many of our formal and casual dress shirts are made from the Egyptian Giza 45 cotton because it is one of the finest cotton available. This luxurious fabric makes our shirts visibly silkier, stronger and more breathable than regular cotton.
